A Day in the Life: Q+A with Terry Cline

Worked too long on the assembly line at Whirlpool building microwave ovens. Discovered OSU had a film school so I stopped shooting screws and learned how to shoot film and video. Graduate of The Ohio State University, Department of Photography and Cinema. BFA should be an MFA; certain classes only being offered every three years.

I am an independent producer/director/writer: CHALLENGE Productions/CHALLENGE Aerial Imaging. Even though I live in Marion, Ohio my work has taken me to all points of the compass in the U.S. For the past eighteen months, I’ve been working on a documentary about COVID-19 and its effect on Marion County.

Morning:

The alarm clock wakes me at 4:30 A.M. with Q-FM 96. I muster the energy to be on my feet by 5:00 A.M. I don’t drink coffee so mornings start with a two-liter Diet Pepsi and four Snickers bars to get my heart started and creative chemistry going. While the caffeine and sugar kick in I read the local newspaper and then The Columbus Dispatch to see what’s happening in business. Then it’s either off to shoot or edit; currently learning DaVinci Resolve.

Here is one of my favorite portraits. This is Dr. Harold Brown, one of the few living WW II P-51 Mustang pilots, a Tuskegee Airman. I took this when he visited a fly-in in Marion, Ohio.

Afternoon:

Afternoon is a continuation of morning business development, returning telephone calls, and editing. Sometimes I have the opportunity to do yard work. How do you keep up with the weeds? Been thinking about the best way to fill in a swimming pool; hopefully this fall. Late afternoons I try to get a ride in on Marion’s Tall Grass Trail; trailhead to Marion/Hardin County Line and back is about twenty-four miles.

Evening:

Evening, after five is margarita time, on the rocks, and daydream time with a good cigar. My favorite restaurant is my back porch where I grill many kinds of meat. I love smoking salmon with mesquite wood.
