More on Willie Jolley

I was so energized after listening to Willie Jolley speak this week! Here is a short video of his message. You can also hear him weekly on XM 169, The Power, 1-3pm on Saturdays and 7-9am on Sundays. Lastly, if you like what you hear, contact WOSU and request “Turning Setbacks Into Comebacks With Willie Jolley”. The more it’s requested, the more it will air. And the more it’s aired, perhaps, the more energized we’ll all feel–and that will be a good thing.

Taking Up the Slack

When I first saw the title of this article was “Slack”, I thought it was about Gen X being slackers (again, I’m so tired of that label). Au contraire…it’s about how to take up the slack and make use of extra time you may have right now. And it’s pretty darn smart!

Two key suggestions: Learn something new and earn a following or reputation. Great article, well worth the read!

Getting Through Today’s Economic Situation

Are you tired of hearing the same thing on the news–companies are closing or laying off, the stock market is down, and on and on? I know I am. So when I went to a seminar Tuesday and the speaker, Willie Jolley, offered some great advice on getting through today’s economic situation, I wanted to pass it on.

1) Don’t panic. When you panic, your ability to make good decisions diminish.

2) Don’t willingly participate. Do the opposite of the naysayers and you will achieve different results.

3) Don’t commiserate. Have you ever felt better after having a conversation about the economy? If not, then why continue to do it?

4) Don’t give up. Continue to look for options. Sometimes opportunities are in the least unsuspecting places.

5) Be creative. Find new ways to adapt. Change is not the enemy, it is a part of the process.

6) Be proactive. Surround yourself with people you want to be like and educate yourself. This includes reading self-help books and listening to motivational speakers like Jolley.

7) Be positive. Have a positive outlook, take action, and act on your beliefs.

Lastly, Jolley said “If there’s something in your life that you don’t like, change it. But if you can’t change it, change your attitude.” Attitude is everything.

Trying Something New

Today we are launching completely new software for our business. Difficult? Yes. Confusing? Yes. Frustrating? You bet. But once it’s up and running (and we know what we’re doing) the result will be more efficient work, quicker access to information and a better quality of work overall. We know it will be worth all of the time and effort, so we keep working through the questions and unknowns.

Anytime you do something new or different it often is uncomfortable, awkward, inefficient and sometimes downright irritating. Just keep your eye on the end goal and push yourself through. Very few people naturally are comfortable networking, making contacts, going to events, meeting new people, reaching out to someone with a potential job lead. But the payoff usually is completely worth all the effort. (I’ll remind myself of this the next time I’m faced with a big room full of people I don’t know.)

Columbus Pink Slip Party 3/4/09

Networking meets cocktail party. You may have heard of this new phenomenon, “Pink Slip Parties”, where recently unemployed or fearful-of-being unemployed people have the opportunity to mingle with recruiters and employers. Already happening in other cities, Columbus is about to host it’s first version Wednesday March 4th at Confluence Park. Tickets available here, it should be good for general networking although I’m still a big fan of focusing on your targeted industry first.

Check Yourself Out Online

A great cautionary tale about knowing what’s “out there” online about you. Looking for a job, client, date, resource? People will look you up. Find out what they’ll see first, and correct anything that is not the image you want to portray.
